Advising without borders: Pablo Figueroa on guiding UHNW clients through global wealth challenges

As private wealth becomes increasingly international, the role of the adviser is changing from managing assets to managing complexity. Global Private Banker speaks with Pablo Figueroa, Director, Investment Counselor at Citi Wealth on how he guides ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) families through the complexities of international wealth, regulation, and generational change.

Pablo Figueroa’s career in private banking has taken him from Madrid to Zurich and Singapore — and across three of the world’s major banking institutions: Santander, Credit Suisse, and Citi Private Bank. Over that journey, he has seen wealth management evolve from product-driven transactions to deeply personal, cross-border relationships built on trust and cultural fluency.

Understanding wealth across borders

“Ultra-high-net-worth families may be global in reach, but their decisions are anchored in local realities,” says Figueroa. “Bridging cultural differences is essential — clients need to feel understood in their resident country while being connected to global opportunities. That’s when trust is built.”

For Figueroa, wealth planning is not a static exercise. The priorities of one generation often shift before the next is ready to take over. Anticipating those transitions, he says, allows advisers to offer continuity and reassurance — qualities that matter more than any market forecast.

“Ultimately, I want clients to see my team as a one-stop partner, already working on what comes next — even before they ask”, he emphasises.

Lessons from three financial cultures

Figueroa’s international career has given him what he calls “a trilingual perspective” on private banking. “At Credit Suisse I absorbed Swiss precision, at Santander adaptability, and at Citi the power of global reach,” he says. “Combined with my Mexican personality, these lessons shaped a style of advice that is empathetic, practical, and globally connected.”

Those lessons, he adds, were not learned from institutions alone. “What has truly defined my journey are the people — mentors, colleagues, and clients worldwide who have shaped me, not only as a professional, but as a person.”

That human element, he believes, is what allows advisers to interpret wealth through multiple lenses — blending local understanding with global capability.

Balancing sophistication with simplicity

As financial products grow more complex, Figueroa maintains that sophistication should never come at the expense of clarity. “Complex tools only add value when they serve a clear purpose — hedging, diversification, or tailored exposure,” he explains. “If they don’t tie directly to a client’s plan, they risk becoming unnecessary noise.”

This, he says, is where communication becomes indispensable. “I make sure clients understand why each tool exists and how it supports their goals. Clarity builds trust, and trust allows us to use sophisticated strategies without overwhelming the relationship.” The best advice, he adds,  is not the most complex — it’s the most relevant.

Adapting to change, preserving direction

Taxation, regulation, and market sentiment can shift quickly across jurisdictions, but Figueroa believes the most valuable advice lies in foresight rather than reaction. “Regulation and taxation often shape wealth more than markets,” he says. “With families across jurisdictions, complexity grows quickly. My approach is to stay proactive — anticipating changes with specialists and raising questions before they become urgent.”

Even so, adaptability must be balanced with discipline. “We cannot rebuild a plan every time a rule shifts,” he cautions. “The goal is to design resilient, flexible strategies that adapt without losing direction.”

That principle extends beyond planning to innovation. Figueroa sees technology as an enabler, not a replacement, of personal advice. “The best innovations simplify the client experience and deliver real impact,” he says. “Technology should enhance advisers’ reach and insight, allowing more time where it matters most — deepening client relationships.”

A new generation, a new mindset

Figueroa believes the next generation of wealth holders will continue to redefine priorities. “Mobility, sustainability, and impact are no longer secondary,” he says. “They see wealth as a reflection of identity and values.”

That transition, he adds, is how private banking translate into a more human profession — one that connects purpose with prosperity. “These conversations go beyond money. By linking wealth with purpose, the next generation is transforming what it means to preserve — and use — wealth. I see that as an opportunity to grow alongside them.”
