Barclays has appointed veteran banker Hiroshi Minoura as Chairman of Investment Banking in Japan to strengthen strategic leadership and capitalise on growing cross-border and investment opportunities.
Barclays Securities Japan Limited has appointed Hiroshi Minoura as Chairman of Investment Banking in Japan, reinforcing its senior leadership as it seeks to expand its presence in one of its most important global markets. In his new position, Minoura will be responsible for providing strategic direction to the Japanese investment banking business and ensuring close alignment with Barclays’ wider global priorities.
Minoura has advised Barclays’ investment banking operations in Japan as a senior adviser since July 2024, where he has been closely involved in shaping strategy and supporting key client initiatives. As Chairman, he is expected to draw on his extensive international experience and well-established industry relationships to spearhead major strategic transactions, promote cross-border activity, broaden the firm’s client franchise and deepen long-term client engagement.
Bringing nearly five decades of industry experience, Minoura previously served as Senior Adviser and Chairman at BofA Securities Japan, with a focus on strengthening client relationships and advancing business development. Prior to that, he spent 37 years at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, where he held a number of senior leadership roles in Japan and overseas, including Vice Chairman and Deputy President.
Japan continues to be a core market for Barclays’ global investment banking strategy, supported by increasing outbound cross-border mergers and acquisitions by Japanese companies. Favourable domestic conditions, including persistently low interest rates, ongoing corporate governance reforms and a weaker yen, have also contributed to robust capital inflows into the country. Commenting on the appointment, Yuzo Otsuka, Head of Investment Banking in Japan, said that Minoura’s elevation reflects Barclays’ commitment to capturing growth opportunities in Japan, adding that his leadership will enable the firm to deliver enhanced value to its clients.
