Citi Australia and New Zealand has announced several significant appointments across its Research and Markets businesses, marking a strategic investment in talent and leadership to strengthen its franchise in the region.
Paul Buys has been appointed as the new Head of Research for Australia and New Zealand, joining from Canaccord Genuity, where he is currently Head of Research. With over 25 years of experience in financial markets—including as Deputy Head of APAC Securities Research at Credit Suisse—Buys will join Citi as a Managing Director and become a member of the Australian and New Zealand Executive Committee.
Commenting on the appointment, Brent Robinson, Citi’s Head of Research for Japan, Australia, North & South Asia, said:
“Paul is a respected analyst who brings over 25 years’ experience in financial markets. His appointment further strengthens our world-class research team.”
Buys will succeed Paul McTaggart, who will retire at the end of the year after a distinguished 30-year career in sell-side research. This leadership change follows the recent appointment of Laura Sutcliffe as Head of Healthcare Research.

Simultaneously, Citi has expanded its Markets business with four strategic hires and one key internal promotion:
- Christian Ford has been named Director, Equities High Touch Execution. He joins from Jefferies Australia, where he was a Managing Director and Head of Sales Trading.

- Nicolas Lebon joins as Director, Corporate Solutions Group from Credit Agricole CIB.
- Dan Smith has been promoted to Head of Australia, Prime Finance, after eight years in Citi’s Prime Services Sales and two decades of global experience.
Mark Woodruff, CEO of Citi Australia, commented:
“These new appointments reflect Citi’s continued investment in our Australian franchise, as we strive to deliver the best outcomes for our clients in a dynamic market environment.”
Cristina Chang, Head of Markets for Australia and New Zealand, added:
