The European Investment Bank (EIB) Group has announced the global rollout of its Green Checker tool, expanding the solution beyond the European Union to assist banks in identifying projects suitable for green financing and to help businesses worldwide gain access to sustainable funding. According to the EIB, the Green Checker provides a crucial solution for supporting eligibility assessments for both green and broader sustainability investments and enterprises. This functionality allows users to assess project eligibility, estimate the climate impact of a venture, and download comprehensive assessment results that detail projected energy savings and emissions reductions, all while confirming consistency with the EU Taxonomy and EIB climate standards.
While the tool was originally designed for financial intermediaries such as commercial banks, leasing companies, and national promotional institutions to pinpoint green projects, the EIB has made it free and publicly accessible. This accessibility is intended to allow Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and other businesses to assess their own projects against the EIB’s green financing criteria, thereby unlocking green finance opportunities. The expanded platform was officially unveiled at the United Nations COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil, and is now available in regions including North Africa, the Middle East, the Western Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Eastern Neighbourhood. The EIB further noted that the upgrade specifically tailors the tool for these regional markets by simplifying data requirements and incorporating flexible parameters suited to local conditions.
Ambroise Fayolle, Vice President of the EIB, stated that the Green Checker is a transformative instrument. He added that it helps companies assess whether their projects meet climate and environmental criteria and determine their eligibility for EIB financing through partner banks. He affirmed, “We are now broadening its scope to include countries beyond Europe, accelerating climate investments globally. The Green Checker is an instrument to simplify the assessment of climate projects, in particular for SMEs.” The EIB confirmed that the Green Checker is part of its wider endeavour to scale up sustainable investment through the EU’s Global Gateway initiative, which aims to mobilise up to €300 billion in public and private funding for projects between 2021 and 2027.
