Investors showing interest in Hong Kong’s wealth management products are increasingly concerned about the city’s political climate, according to a recent survey by industry experts.
The Capital Investment Entrant Scheme, introduced earlier this year, has been notably successful. Financial Secretary Paul Chan highlighted that the program has already received approximately 670 applications, attracting over HK$20 billion in investments.
Concerns about Hong Kong’s political future have risen significantly, with 28% of private wealth management clients expressing apprehension in 2024 compared to 21% in 2023. Industry professionals attribute this trend to ongoing geopolitical tensions, such as international disputes and a rise in global elections, contributing to a heightened sense of uncertainty.
Economic issues in China also emerged as a top concern, ranking just behind central bank policies on interest rates. This marks a shift from the previous year when China’s economy ranked lower on the list of pressing matters.
Despite these challenges, wealth management firms in Hong Kong reported a significant increase in net inflows, which nearly tripled in 2023, reaching HK$341 billion compared to HK$121 billion in 2022. Investments from Hong Kong and mainland China, contributing over two-thirds of the total, drove a modest growth of 0.6% in total assets under management after two years of decline.
The Wealth Management Connect initiative has also bolstered the sector. By facilitating cross-boundary investment opportunities for residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and cities in Guangdong province, the scheme has expanded the variety and accessibility of investment products. Recent enhancements, such as raising the individual investment quota and including new deposit products, have fueled growth. In the months leading up to September, cross-boundary fund flows surged, reflecting strong interest from investors in the Greater Bay Area.
Efforts to position Hong Kong as a hub for ultra-high-net-worth individuals and family offices have also shown promise. Key figures in the wealth management space are focusing on strategies to ensure effective wealth succession, contributing to the city’s continued relevance as a financial center.
