Hayden Matthews, Founder and CEO of Volans, leads the development of a technology platform designed to extend portfolio financing beyond traditional private banking. Headquartered in Sydney, Volans provides wealth infrastructure and lending capabilities to wealth managers and their clients.
Matthews previously worked in private banking at JPMorgan in Singapore and served as Head of HSBC Private Bank Australia. At Volans, he has focused on addressing the gap between investment platforms and access to lending, allowing clients to raise capital against eligible portfolios without necessarily moving their assets or changing investment arrangements.
The company doubled its loan book between 2024 and 2025 and is forecasting record volumes in 2026. It has also reported 100% client retention during the period. A core component of its platform is an internally developed dynamic loan-to-value engine, which assesses collateral in real time across multi-currency and globally diversified portfolios.
Volans integrates its platform with wealth management systems across Australia and New Zealand, with the aim of making portfolio financing more accessible through existing adviser and investment infrastructure. The company’s technology and growth have received industry recognition, including The Digital Banker’s Best Investment Management Platform and Rising Star awards.
Matthews describes Volans’ role as complementary to existing wealth platforms. “Volans doesn’t manage the money — it finances it,” he says. “They’ve solved investing, and we solve capital.” The model is intended to allow advisers to arrange portfolio financing while clients retain their existing investment relationships and asset arrangements.
The company’s next phase is focused on international expansion. New Zealand is currently in development, followed by plans to enter other Asian markets. Longer term, Volans aims to establish its platform across major wealth markets, including the United States and United Kingdom.
For Matthews, the broader objective is captured in Volans’ guiding principle, “Solve for capital, not just investments”. The company takes its name from Volans, the flying fish constellation, reflecting its focus on operating across the investment and financing sides of wealth management.
